Family Law

Scott has regularly represented clients involved in sensitive family law matters from his first position as an associate attorney at McGuireWoods LLP in the 1990s to the present.  That experience has taught Scott that when reconciliation is not possible, reasonable clients, as opposed to those who are vindictive or seek to “punish” their ex-spouse, tend to obtain the best results in family law matters, whether they involve separation, divorce, child custody and visitation, child support or spousal support (alimony).  Divorce and custody disputes in Virginia can be expensive and time consuming, but Scott’s experience allows him to efficiently craft solutions that protect his client’s interests and allow them to move on with their lives.

Children unfortunately suffer in most divorces, and Scott encourages his clients to put the needs of their children first in difficult family law matters that involve minor children.  While every family situation is different, the law in Virginia mandates that the best interests of the child guide the courts.  As such, that standard should also guide the parents, and Scott encourages his clients to avoid putting the children in the middle of disputes that are really between the parents.

Scott’s family law practice includes extensive experience with separation and property settlement agreements, divorces involving business valuation issues, and the drafting and preparation of pre-marital agreements, also called prenuptial agreements, as well as post-nuptial marital agreements.  Where necessary or advisable, Scott also calls on the services of other professionals, such as counselors, financial advisors, CPAs, and valuation experts to assist his clients in family law matters.
